Can Intermittent Fasting Change The Aging Process?

Previous studies have shown that intermittent fasting (IF) is beneficial for slowing down the
aging process and losing weight, but a recent Harvard study is exploring the science behind these amazing benefits.

Why is this important? Studies HAVE shown that if we can understand the science of HOW a lifestyle change works, we are more likely to be motivated and stick with lasting positive changes in our lives.

Intermittent fasting is a key component of The Galveston Diet – and studies prove that if you understand the science, you are much more likely to be successful in your endeavor.

So what’s the science? Pardon some of the technical jargon, but here it goes:

Our mitochondria are the energy-producing structure inside of our cells – you may remember “powerhouse of the cell” (throwback to high school biology). According to the energy demand our cell/body requires, they are able to change shape (from “fused” to “fragmented” states and vice versa) and adapt to different conditions as needed. This phenomenon is called mitochondrial plasticity.

As we age, the mitochondria loses its ability to change their shape and adapt to the changing needs of the body. The “mitochondrial aging” leads to declines in both our metabolism and cellular functions – helloooo aging.

Amazingly enough, researchers found that when our diets are “restricted” (i.e. during fasting periods), mitochondrial networks are actually maintained in a more youthful state and regain some plasticity. This youthful state during fasting increases lifespan AND leads to a more efficient modulation of fat metabolism.

Although early in the research process, scientists are hopeful that adopting an intermittent fasting lifestyle will become one of the first line strategies to reduce and protect against age-related diseases.

One can be certain that our mitochondrial network plasticity is very important in aging and prolonging this flexibility is an important benefit of intermittent fasting.

It is research and findings like these that exemplify why I chose to make intermittent fasting a huge part of The Galveston Diet. I encourage you to jump in with both feet; do more research yourself on the amazing benefits of intermittent fasting if you need more convincing and I promise it will not disappoint. Start gradually, do not be afraid of failure, and make choices that promote your health and wellbeing.
